New rules – each movie had to had 5% of the vote in the #1 slot to be considered for Best Picture. We narrow it down to The Artist or The Help. The Help won big at the SAG Awards but as Kristyn points out the SAG Awards is about acting not that’s not a best picture. We all loved The Artist due to the romance and nostalgia celebrating movies – if you haven’t seen it, there’s still time.

  • “The Descendants” Jim Burke, Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor, Producers
  • “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close” Scott Rudin, Producer

The Red Carpet Report, Mingle Media TV’s “Oscar Insider” on Foreign, Documentary and Animation Nominees

In this series of blog posts, we’ll be sharing the observations of our Entertainment Reporter, Kristyn Burtt, with you between now and the Oscars. We’ll be covering the Oscars from set up to day of at the Kodak Theatre and will be on the red carpet talking to celebrities on the day of the event as well.

Today, we’re looking at Animated, Foreign and Documentary features that are up for the Oscar – and the controversy that is being talked about this year as it relates to each category and or film. Let us know your thoughts by posting here on our blog.

  • “Chico & Rita” Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal
  • “Kung Fu Panda 2″ Jennifer Yuh Nelson
  • “Puss in Boots” Chris Miller
  • “Rango” Gore Verbinski

We were at the Annie Awards last week and “Rango” won best picture – not to jinx the outcome of the Oscars but the Annie Awards winners usually find themselves holding an Oscar as well.

Documentary (Feature)

  • “Hell and Back Again” Danfung Dennis and Mike Lerner
  • “If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front” Marshall Curry and Sam Cullman
  • “Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory” Charles Ferguson and Audrey Marrs

There new rules for being nominated for a documentary and Kristyn reviews what they are.
Foreign Language Film
  • “Bullhead” Belgium
  • “Footnote”
  • “In Darkness” Poland
  • “Monsieur Lazhar” Canada
  • “A Separation” Iran
This is a one film race – which one do you think she’s talking about. Also, what is the controversy surrounding Foreign Film submissions?

Let’s see what else Kristyn has to say:

Don’t worry, we will be back with more Behind the Scenes coverage on the road to the Oscars with our Behind the Red Carpet coverage featuring Kristyn Burtt.

Today We Lost a Friend, a Father, a Filmmaker: Andy Swan

Andy Swan

Jen and Andy Swan - July 2010

Today, we lost a friend, a father, a filmmaker, Andy Swan. Andy put up a very strong fight, one that matches his character and spirit and we are so proud of him and wish his family and friends love and support during this time.

We first met Andy last summer at an event we were invited to by another friend, Lee Allport from My Sentiment Exactlee blog back on July 24th 2010: At the Action On Film International Film Festival VI, where AREA 9 Productions will presented “SWAN,” a charity event to benefit the Lung Cancer Foundation Of America. This event was hosted by Executive Producer Ed Bernero and the cast of the popular CBS television show, “CRIMINAL MINDS” in Pasadena.

In attendance, supporting Andy Swan and his family were Shemar Moore, Ed Bernero, and Kirsten Vangsness from Criminal Minds, Al and Zadrina Eisenmann from Area 9 Productions and more.

In February 2010, just as his career was beginning to take off, 34-year-old writer/director Andy Swan was diagnosed with Stage 4 Lung Cancer, a total shock as Andy was never a smoker. Through his drive and determination, coupled with cutting-edge cancer treatments and tremendous support from his family, friends and colleagues, Andy put up a year long battle and today he was called home. Andy was a partner in AREA 9 Productions. He is survived by his wife Jen Swan and his 4-year-old son, Nicholas.

For more info on the Lung Cancer Foundation of America please visit: lcfamerica.org

To find out how you can support Andy Swan’s cause, his family and the Lung Cancer Foundation of America in this cause, please visit: www.area9productions.com

Andy would want us all to “keep going” and in his honor, we will do just that, keep going.
