How You Can Make the Most of #WebSeriesChat on Twitter

Why #WebSeriesChat?

Over a year ago Patrick from Slebisodes and Stephanie from MingleMediaTV decided to host a weekly chat to help bring together independent filmmakers, writers, actors, fans, producers of web series to share ideas and build community.

Initially, we were pulling in guests which was really fun to meet people outside of the LA web series world and then we would have topics from funding to marketing to budgets. But sometimes it gets old. We have always been open to suggestions from our community and have supported community events from festivals to Celebrate the Web.

With that said – there are some rules of the road that we all should follow. Here’s the business side of my brain along with feedback we’ve seen from others in the community who have tried to join the chat but have found it somewhat disjointed at times.

We are not “Cat Herders”

  • We announce via Twitter and Facebook the topic of the day before #WebSeriesChat starts, we also tweet it during the chat – so @MingleTVNetwork @Slebisodes or searching on #WebSeriesChat in Twitter will provide you with what we are talking about for that week.
  • If we have an invited guest, we encourage you to join in the conversation and ask questions about their series or expertise.
  • We ask that you keep OFF TOPIC conversations off #WebSeriesChat during the hour – you are free to chat with anyone on Twitter – but keep the #WebSeriesChat hashtag off if it is not related to the current topic
  • We ask that you keep your promo tabled until the end of chat as the last 5 minutes are dedicated to self-promo.

Respect your fellow creator.

Twitter is not like a BlogTalkRadio or Stickam show where the hosts can hold the conversation / topic without being interrupted by the chat room. In a Twitter chat – your off-topic tweets are in the stream. These tweets to other participants are a distraction and are disrespectful to the guests who have agreed to join the chat and share their expertise for that brief time period.

  • If you don’t like the conversation topic – then don’t use the #WebSeriesChat hashtag and hold your own conversations separately.
  • If you don’t like the conversation topic – and have a topic you’d like covered – tweet to @Slebisodes or @MingleMediaTV and suggest it for coverage for a future #WebSeriesChat session – that way your topic will get the attention it deserves
  • The weekly #WebSeriesChat is hosted by @Slebisodes @MingleMediaTV and we’re the hosts and the leaders of the “show” – so respect us, the guests and or the topic selected for the week – we’re trying to support the community and it is not all about YOU when it’s time for the weekly #WebSeriesChat on Twitter – it’s about the topic/guest.

With that said – we are huge supporters of the Web Series community – we provide services to many web series by promoting their series through listings and hosting on our respective sites. We are panelists at festivals and industry events and have made the weekly chat something we didn’t give up on like so many others before or during us – it’s not easy to promote and hold chat every week – and we do it. We also are trying to bring NEW people into chat so you are exposed to other ways to launch your series successfully.

You may agree that sometimes the topic has been beaten to death over and over  in chat and nothing new is shared – hence the need to come up with new and fresh topics that are planned by @Slebisodes & @MingleMediaTV for that next #WebSeriesChat.

There are other weekly chats from other industries on Twitter and they are very focused and the audience is very in-tune with what is going on for that week. We want #WebSeriesChat to be fun and engaging – but if you aren’t happy with the topic, you don’t have to stay and disrupt it – we won’t hold it against you.

We want to make this chat something that helps all involved with web series meet new people, learn new things and we always welcome your suggestions AHEAD of TIME to making it even better.

Thanks for participating and supporting the weekly chat.

Meet Jillian Clare, Award-winning Actress Working in Traditional and Digital New Media

Jillian Clare

Jillian Clare, ITVFest Best Actress 2011 Award Winner

Meet Jillian Clare (star and executive producer of the teen series Miss Behave and Haley Ferguson from the Emmy nominated Nickelodeon movie Freak the Freak Out) who has just joined the cast of the feature film, THE KITCHEN.

Jillian has a lot to celebrate this year with her recent nomination in the best actress category at the International Television Festival for her teen series Miss Behave, which was also an Official Selection of the Festival and then winning Best Actress in a Drama at the ITVFest.

Jillian’s new role in THE KITCHEN, which is a comedy about a girl’s ill-fated 30th birthday party, where she plays Nikki – a friendly and flirtatious ditz who has an inner logic that somehow makes sense. Jillian’s on-screen boyfriend is played by Adam Chambers (“Night of  the Living Dead 3D: Re-Animation”) and other cast members include Laura Prepon (“Lay the Favorite,” NBC series “Are You There Vodka, It’s Me Chelsea”) and Bryan Greenberg (HBO series “How to Make it in America”).  The film is directed by Ishai Setton (“The Big Bad Swim”), written by Jim Beggarly (“Free Samples”), and produced by Emily Ting (“Family Inc.”).

We’ve talked to Jillian on several occasions after meeting her on the red carpet and we’re excited to see her continue to grow and succeed in both traditional and digital media. We’re also looking forward to seeing what happens in Season Three of her multi-award winning teen drama Miss Behave which is gearing up for filming later this year. Catch it on their site http://www.missbehave.tv

Clare is repped by Greene & Associates and managed by Brandon Talent Management.

Can four college students help change the world?  A van full of college basketball player’s intent on learning about social change travelled from the East Coast to Montana, as part of Unity Hoops Basketball. David Dean, a college sophomore, will outline the mission of Unity Hoops Basketball when he guests on the Insightful Player online show on MingleMediaTV.com, Tuesday night at 7 p.m. ET. Mingle Media TV produces and broadcasts over 40 hours of web series and event coverage each week.

Dean has several passions in life.  A political science major, he’s fascinated with social change.  Since a high school history class, he’s been concerned with the plight of American Indian children growing up on reservations in a culture of poverty, unemployment, and alcoholism. He also loves basketball.  In high school, he was a point guard and captain of his team.  In his freshman year at Guilford, he continued to play basketball earning All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference Academic honors.

And six months ago, he had an idea… While many college students spend their time looking to be hired for a summer internship, David and three college friends have done something else.   They’re creating theirs from thin air.

This spring, David and three colleagues—one woman, three men—have formed Unity Hoops Basketball. Their goal is to work with Crow Indian teenagers, using basketball to help them learn much larger life lessons.

“Unity Hoops was founded as a basketball collective that aims to use our sport as a common language to teach far greater life lessons to young people in need, inspiring them to believe in larger possibilities for themselves, and empowering them to pursue their limitless potential,” said Dean. “We are dedicated to providing the role models, resources and knowledge necessary to instill this self-belief, as well as a deep-seeded understanding that together everyone truly does achieve more.”

Their current mission is focused around helping youth of the Crow Indian Reservation in southern Montana.  In their work on the reservation they are hosted by The Center Pole, a youth outreach center on the reservation run by Peggy White and Susie Kelly.  We are also sponsored by Running Strong for American Youth, a nonprofit located in northern, VA.

Life can be tough for Indian children living on the Crow Reservation south of Billings, Montana.  They grow up in families that are racked by alcoholism and poverty.  75% of the adults are unemployed.  For those who attempt college, there is a 95% attrition rate.

On the Insightful Player show on MongleMediaTV.com Dean will give an in-depth look at the lives of these children that Unity Hoops has worked with; provide an understanding of the universal issues on reservations; give an overview of Unity Hoops philosophy on sport and offer a wish list of donations and other resources that Unity Hoops needs to accomplish its Mission.

Washington Redskins Hall of Fame linebacker Ken Harvey, one of 32 current and former NFL players recognized as Insightful Players will be the guest of the new weekly Insightful Player online show on MingleMediaTV.com  Tuesday night  July 5 at 7 p.m. ET. Mingle Media TV produces and broadcasts over 40 hours of web series and event coverage each week.

Chrissy Carew, a Master Certified personal and business coach based in Nashua, NH founded Insightful Player™ in April 2010 with a vision of providing an answer to a crucial worldwide calling for messages of hope that provoke positive actions.  “I’m thrilled to have an online show on MingleMediaTV.com where I’m able to interview my Insightful Players like Ken Harvey and have their stories told to the world,” said Carew, who serves as the host of the show. Carew was inducted into the International Coaching Federation (ICF) New England Chapter’s newly-established Hall of Fame on June 13.

The Insightful Player™ team members, like Harvey, are individuals that believed in themselves and relentlessly pursued their most far-reaching dreams, which resulted in a career in the National Football League.  The Insightful Player.com website features the inspirational stories of 32 current and former NFL players, each of whom overcame great obstacles and hardships to become not just fine athletes, but through their values and their life experiences, became extraordinary individuals that serve as an inspiration to us all.

The short-version of Ken Harvey’s Insightful Player story is available on InsightfulPlayer.com. The full-length version will appear in the Insightful Player book that will be published by Morgan-James Publishing this summer. Kenneth Harvey is a former NFL Pro Bowl linebacker who is now the president of The Ken Harvey Companies. He writes as a hobby but enjoys the thrill of taking a single sheet of paper and making it come alive with imagination.

Twelve years after he left the game, Harvey is enjoying a life of entrepreneurship and writing with the debut of Xavier: A Hero No More, his first novel. From a high school dropout to the NFL and more, Kenneth is a believer that anything is possible.

The four-time nominee to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Harvey is also one of the Redskins’ 70 Greatest Players. He believes that his new novel demonstrates some of the struggles players have after leaving the game.  Harvey has established his own website:  www.transition57.com as a means for educating players about becoming entrepreneurs after their playing days are over.

Ken really has a heart for other athletes in transition. He cares about their ability to transition from sports to the marketplace; from inactivity to activity fueled by good health and healthy habits; from a mindset of contentment with life on the field to a sky’s the limit attitude off of the field; from irresponsibility to responsibility.

Excerpt for Ken Harvey’s InsightfulPlayer.com story:

Ken Harvey believes in second chances. “Mistakes happen,” says the former linebacker for the Phoenix Cardinals and the Washington Redskins and current Washington Redskins Director of Responsibility. “What matters in life is how effectively you rally after making and recognizing a misstep.”

Ken’s own missteps, from his perspective, date back to his decision to drop out of high school despite the urging of his coach and parents to stay in school and work hard. After leaving high school, he fell into a rut of destructive thought patterns. “Once you start thinking you’re not much good for anything, you resign yourself to getting the lowest-paying job, or you go to an interview but you’re not fully prepared. Then you wonder why you’re not getting a better job or you’re not making it. It’s because you’ve set your standards low and everything around you has become that standard.”

One day he picked up a newspaper to see what kind of job he could hope to have without a high school diploma. The prospects, he realized, were grim. He knew he would need to set the bar higher for himself. But doing so was a gradual process. “I had a plan as to how I was going to get into college. I worked out every day and lifted weights and ran. I stopped going to parties …. I started hanging around good people.”

In a way, it all goes back to his decision to go back to high school after dropping out: an attitude of persistence that has stayed with him ever since. “I believe in second chances. I believe in that we can help each other out. I always try to look at the hope and the good inside of people. I think that’s it. No matter what, if you look deep enough, there is good in almost everyone.”
