After playing college football at Appalachian State University, Wilcox began his NFL career in 2001 signing as an undrafted free agent with the New York Jets, He joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2002 and then played for the Rhein Fire in NFL Europe before joining the Baltimore Ravens in 2004 where he played through 2008, including being a member of the Super Bowl XXXVII champions.

Carew will discuss with Wilcox how he avoided becoming a statistic in a community filled with violence and drugs, growing up without a father and allowed his dedication and guidance from his mother helped mold him into a successful athlete and role model. Wilcox will also discuss his work with his Baltimore-based foundation, Empowerment Minds, and how he wants kids to go where they have never been before.

Daniel Wilcox could have been a statistic. He grew up without a father in a community filled with violence and drugs. He never thought he would make it to 21.

How this self-described ‘ordinary, nothing super special’ guy became an accomplished NFL athlete dedicated to motivating and inspiring kids is a remarkable story.

“My Mom was my difference maker,” Daniel remembers. “She made sure I didn’t have too much idle time to get into trouble.” Carol Wilcox taught her son how to throw a football and baseball and she was a little league baseball coach.

Early on, Daniel’s outstanding athletic talent helped him choose a different path.

“I saw kids selling drugs a lot”, he recalls. “They had much nicer things than me, but I didn’t care. I never wanted to live that life. After a while, I was doing so well in sports they wouldn’t let me near the stuff! They looked out for me – they thought I would do something with my life.”

Daniel didn’t meet his father until he was 17. “At first it was shaky. It took 2 – 3 years to acclimate to each other. He did everything he could to help me grow up and become a man. Now he’s one of my best friends.”

What Daniel didn’t get as a child is the very thing he is giving to kids. He launched his Baltimore-based foundation, Empowerment Minds, because he wants kids to go where they have never been before.

A lot of kids use “I am a victim of my environment” as an excuse, Daniel observes. He doesn’t let them get away with that. This “no excuses” attitude especially applies to education.

Daniel’s special message for kids: “You are the people who are going to make this world better. You’re going to take us adults into the rest of our lives. We believe in you, and we are counting on you. Your individual and personal role is very important.”

In addition to his Foundation, Daniel participates in other good causes, such as visiting troops in Afghanistan. He admits that, without his ability to tap into his strong desire and follow through, plus his previous travel experiences, he never would have had the courage to take that trip.

Commitment is one of Daniel’s biggest themes. “People will tell you that you aren’t good enough, fast enough, smart enough, talented enough or creative enough. Don’t give up on yourself! You can be anything you want to be in this world.”

Former NFL tight end Damian Vaughn has spent many years contemplating the meaning of success and how it can be used toward a greater purpose. His passion is helping top-tier athletes tap into their greater potential as role models and inspirations rather than just as sports heroes. The drive to play a sport well is important, he believes, but far more important is learning to accessing the well of motivation that lies within each of us and harnessing it for more profound results.

In Damian’s own case, the desire to be the best player he could be had both a down side and an upside. To his enormous credit, he demonstrated superlative effort and stamina as a young athlete working his way to the top. On the other hand, he believes it was this determined bent toward overachieving that ultimately resulted in career-ending injuries. Today, one reason he has devoted his post-sports career to helping athletes recognize their potential is with the hope of helping others avoid the pitfalls into which he stumbled.

As Damian sees it, parents and coaches need to help children strike a balance between working hard to develop athletic abilities while also keeping sight of the other areas of potential in their futures. He recalls an incident that took place when he stayed with friends in Florida last year. While sleeping in the room of his hosts’ teenage son, he spotted a poster on the boy’s wall that posed the question “Why do I play football?” Also on the poster was the boy’s answer: something along the lines of “so that I can get more girls and be popular and people will respect me.” Though Damian admits he felt the same way as a fourteen-year-old high school player, he found it alarming to see the sentiment so nakedly expressed.

Wanting to impress girls or be popular is an extrinsic motivation, he says – as is having a goal to be an All Conference player, go to the championship game, or be a leader in your position among your peers and your league. By contrast, “when you’re intrinsically motivated, your focus becomes much more about presence and awareness, being fully present in everything that you’re doing.”

A parent of a young son and daughter himself, Damian believes many parents make the mistake of micromanaging their young athletes’ games. “When you see parents getting overly aggressive with their kids’ coaches, they’re not allowing their kids to really shine and develop for themselves,” he says.

On the other hand, parents who are able to look for teaching moments in children’s sports can do a great deal of good by modeling resilience. “For example, if a kid is not getting the playing time that he wants, he sometimes tells himself ‘My coach doesn’t like me’ or ‘I’m not good enough.’ As a parent, you can teach your kids to stay true to their passion regardless of what the results appear to be. It’s so critical at every single moment to recognize that you’re either contributing to positive growth or moving in the opposite direction.”

As a youth, Damian says he was less athletically gifted than some of his teammates on the high school squad in Orrville, Ohio. But the drive to prove he could play Division 1A football led him to Miami University in Ohio to play as a walk-on rather than accept a football scholarship at a smaller school. “So my dad said, ‘I’ll pay for this one year, and if you don’t get a scholarship then you’re on your own.’”

Damian played as a tight end for the Cincinnati Bengals and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, then went on to the Barcelona Dragons in NFL Europe. Although his stats were good, injuries plagued him throughout his career, cutting his pro years short.

The lessons Damian learned from both his triumphs and his adversities would serve as a launching point for his subsequent career as founder of The Vaughn Center in Phoenix, Arizona, which helps athletes focus on their minds and bodies through meditation.

It is in that role that he hopes to effect genuine change in the world of sports. “What you miss when you’re not playing anymore is the feeling of being the hero. But once athletes realize they can leverage that same kind of leadership for a higher purpose, their careers after sports can be truly amazing.” Damian says. “The transition from a sports career should be a stepping stone to ever greater achievement and impact.”

Excerpt from Ben Utecht’s Insightful Player Profile

Graced with many gifts and talents, Ben Utecht grew up in a loving family, surrounded by music. He readily admits that he was far from perfect.  In is early years, he bought into the idea that he was better than others because of superficial things.

Ben was fortunate to have people in his life who told him the truth. He remembers a high school friend saying he had some issues with pride, and that ‘arrogance is not a quality that represents what you stand for’.   “It wasn’t easy to hear,” Ben says, “but it was a revelation.”

”When I left high school, the only thing that I was going to strive to do was to love people and love God.  My perspective about popularity and all those things had changed.”

Ben’s initial plans for a pro football career did not work out as expected. He spent half of his college career with two different injuries that took him completely out of the NFL draft. 

When Ben became a free agent, he was contacted by Tony Dungee, coach of the Indianapolis Colts.  He and Ben are both alumni of the University of Minnesota, and had met at a conference.  The Colts paid Ben for a year while he underwent surgery and rehab. Three years after missing out on the draft, Ben was a starting tight end on the Colt’s Super Bowl championship team.  Without those college injuries, and the related incidents that occurred during that time, that would not have happened.  That experience reinforced his faith and hope. 

Being a part of the NFL has opened some new doors for Ben.  He released his debut Inspirational music CD in April 2009.  Ben’s music reflects his personal mission.  “One of my songs talks about how, if our focus was on love, and how we can better serve people, it would change everything — from politics to religion.”

Ben has an inspiring attitude about his missteps and challenges.  He likens them to a trial by fire. “Some of our most precious metals are forged in the greatest heat,” he explains. Even in the midst of tough times, Ben looks forward to what’s ahead because he knows that growth can come from the greatest adversity.

Ben believes that people really do understand right versus wrong and good versus evil. “If you trust your instincts, you’ll usually make the right choice. It’s like a snowball effect.  The more good choices you make, the easier it gets to keep on doing that.” 

From the outside, it looks as if Ben Utecht has everything, and could easily rest on his laurels. He takes none of this for granted, and believes his work has just begun. “I’ll never be afraid to stand up for what I believe in. And, I’ll always strive to be the best husband and father that I can possibly be.

 “God has given me talents and abilities to do something with them.  I believe my job as an athlete and, hopefully, my job in the future as a musician, is so much more than just giving a performance.  It’s a platform to create change that affects everybody positively. I promise that, no matter if it’s football or music, I’m going to do whatever I can to inspire a new generation to change the world in a positive way.”

On the show, Carew will discuss the core of resilience that has carried Gerome through every stage of his life thus far—from his hardscrabble childhood and an absent father to his ascension as the number one ranked high school football player in the entire state of Texas; the years as an undergraduate at Notre Dame, during which he demonstrated both athletic and academic success; and five strong years in the NFL. And Gerome’s quests are not yet over: he and some former teammates have launched a company called Morph &Thro, LLC. 

Excerpt from Gerome Sapp’s Insightful Player Profile:

Growing up in inner-city Houston, there were times when Gerome Sapp and his siblings had to cope without water or electricity. Other children in those circumstances might develop an embittered view, but for Gerome, it was formative to his remarkably positive outlook. From the experience he learned two important lessons modeled by his mother, Angelia, who always blended the ideal and the practical. “First of all, she would tell us that tomorrow would probably be better,” Gerome recalls. “And second, that it would be a good idea to do our homework early instead of putting it off.”

Because their father was generally absent, his mother signed up her two sons – Gerome and his brother Charles, just one year older — in the Big Brother program. To 7-year-old Gerome, Big Brother Todd Freeman was a godsend. “He opened me up to a whole other side of life that I hadn’t seen,” Gerome says. The two stayed close; Todd attended Gerome’s college football games and his first pro game, and Gerome was in Todd’s wedding party. “He was the first consistent male figure in my life,” Gerome comments.

In high school, Gerome connected with the second major father figure of his youth: his football coach, Lee Malowitz. The players generally considered Coach Malowitz to be tough and not always kind, but Gerome and his brother got to know the coach on a deeper level. “He realized that me and my brother weren’t just the average teenage black males. And we realized that even though a lot of people thought Coach Malowitz hated them, he was hard on us because he didn’t want to see us mess up.”

Both brothers became high school football stars. In his junior year, Gerome was Parade and USA Today First Team All-American. The following year, he was ranked the number one player in Texas. College recruiters were watching, and Coach Malowitz urged the young man to take his academic requirements seriously. Along with studying hard, Gerome and his best friend maintained a commitment to clean living, using each other’s example to avoid the drugs and alcohol in which many of their classmates indulged.

At Malowitz’s urging, Gerome kept his grades up and listened to the college coaches who wanted to sign him. He eventually chose Notre Dame, in part because of its academic reputation and in part because of his mother’s insistence that he use college to explore a different environment from his home state of Texas.

The four years at Notre Dame were fundamental to shaping not only Gerome’s football career but his adult personality as well. “A lot of guys I knew who went off to college couldn’t handle the mental burden. You’re no longer the big shot anymore. So you have to learn how to play a role of a lesser athlete, not what you were in high school. I was able to handle that though.”

His classmates incorrectly stereotyped him based on his color and southern origins, but rather than get angry, Gerome set about proving them wrong by working hard and demonstrating his intellect. To this day, he values the lessons that his social interactions at Notre Dame taught him. “Looking back on it,” he now says, “the most important thing I learned at Notre Dame was how to get along with people in different social environments.”

Entering the NFL was another culture shock. “When you make that kind of money and have that kind of free time, you can get into a lot of different kinds of trouble. But I had my head on my shoulders, so I never was in danger of going off the deep end the way some guys did. Only 5% of the guys in the NFL make the kind of money where you never have to worry about working again. If you’re in the other 95%, you have to save your money and know what you’re going to do when your football career is over.”

It is important to Gerome that young followers understand how many different facets make up one man’s personality. “I always tell kids not to just look at me as an NFL guy,” he says. “To understand who I am, you have to see everything leading up to this point and everything I’ve gone through. That’s the most important thing, to have a perspective when you’re looking at something.”

Montell Owens’ path to the NFL wasn’t easy. He got there through sheer determination and hard work. At Concord High School in Wilmington, Delaware, Montell excelled in academics, music and sports. He was a member of the National Honor Society, a lead trumpet player in the jazz band, and a letterman in football, baseball, and track. As graduation approached, he began to get offers from colleges. The best offer – a full football scholarship – came from a surprising place: The University of Maine. All Montell knew about Maine is that it was cold and nine hours away from home. Still, his parents could not afford to pay for college, and Maine was the opportunity he had been waiting for. There, his running back coach Jeff Cole helped mold him into the player and individual he is today.

Ken Harvey believes in second chances. “Mistakes happen,” says the former linebacker for the Phoenix Cardinals and the Washington Redskins and current Washington Redskins Director of Responsibility. “What matters in life is how effectively you rally after making and recognizing a misstep.”

Ken’s own missteps, from his perspective, date back to his decision to drop out of high school despite the urging of his coach and parents to stay in school and work hard. After leaving high school, he fell into a rut of destructive thought patterns. “Once you start thinking you’re not much good for anything, you resign yourself to getting the lowest-paying job, or you go to an interview but you’re not fully prepared. Then you wonder why you’re not getting a better job or you’re not making it. It’s because you’ve set your standards low and everything around you has become that standard.”

One day he picked up a newspaper to see what kind of job he could hope to have without a high school diploma. The prospects, he realized, were grim. He knew he would need to set the bar higher for himself. But doing so was a gradual process. “I had a plan as to how I was going to get into college. I worked out every day and lifted weights and ran. I stopped going to parties …. I started hanging around good people.”

In a way, it all goes back to his decision to go back to high school after dropping out: an attitude of persistence that has stayed with him ever since. “I believe in second chances. I believe in that we can help each other out. I always try to look at the hope and the good inside of people. I think that’s it. No matter what, if you look deep enough, there is good in almost everyone.”

Excerpt from Usama Young’s Insightful Player Profile

Usama initially thought it was his fault that his parents got divorced.  Most kids in this type of situation feel exactly the same way.  He wrestled with feelings of sadness and anger when he had to go back and forth between his parent’s houses.  Every time he left one of his parents, he was heartbroken to be leaving them.  At first, Usama had a hard time understanding why his parents lived separately.  His greatest wish at the time was that they would get back together.

Usama said, “Every kid wants their parents to be together.  It is so sad that most kids think it is their fault that their parents broke up.”  He wants kids to know it is never their fault, that it will work out in the long run, and that most often it is in the very best interest of everyone.  He encourages kids to work through this and get support. Yes, it can be difficult, but their lives will be much more positive for it.

Usama affectionately recalls how his parents did their very best to keep a smile on their kids’ faces.  Both his parents remarried and his mom blessed Usama with a little sister who is 8 years his junior.  He adores his little sister so much that he couldn’t get on the plane fast enough to visit her and his beloved mother for a few days during the Saints’ bye week.

Usama’s father became a Christian when he remarried.  His mother continued her dedication to her Muslim faith, always reminding Usama to pray.  His dad took him to church, but as a young teen Usama resisted.  One of his brothers told him to listen to his father so Usama started to pay attention at church.  As things began to sink in, his appreciation for his blessings reached new heights.

When Usama hits bumps in the road he relies on his faith.  “It is easy to be happy when everything is good and everyone is on your side.  As soon as things go wrong, we have a natural tendency to put our heads down and complain or even give up.  This is when I am motivated to push myself farther and try even harder.”  He refuses to let life beat him down because he believes the tough times make him stronger and wiser.  He looks at the bumps in the road as opportunities for growth that strengthen his character and make him resilient.  He is amazed how this approach has expanded his perspective of what is possible.

The person Usama admires most is his dad.  “I really listen to my father because he has never steered me wrong.  He has always helped me and still does.  My father has great qualities.  He is attentive and funny.  He always has a smile on his face.  He stands up for what he believes and will put his foot down if he needs to.  I have always respected him and he is such a loving guy.” 

While Usama was attending Kent State he got a frightening phone call from his family. His father was diagnosed with cancer was in intensive care fighting for his life. Usama dropped everything to be by his father’s side.  He was stunned when he saw his father with eyes shut and hooked up to so many tubes.

Usama was scheduled to play in a college all star game, and not just any all star game.  This was part of the National Football League’s pre-draft process.  Usama didn’t want to play because he couldn’t bear to leave his father’s side.  His family rallied around him and reminded him that his dad would want him to play in the game.  With the inspiration from his family, Usama did play, and he played very well.  This created an opportunity for him to get drafted later on. Today his father is healthy, happy, and cancer free.  For Usama, seeing his father so sick was surreal.  It was unimaginable to see his healthy dad in that vulnerable position.  This opened Usama’s eyes and made him respect and appreciate his father even more.
